re:imagine/ATL Brings Career Prep and Community Connections to Dekalb School of the Arts - Film for Social Change

Atlanta, Ga. (January 10, 2017) – re:imagine/ATL announces that re:imagine/COMMUNITY, an in-school film career development program, will be launching in February 2017 at Dekalb School of the Arts. The program equips high school students with technical skills to produce an original video for a corporate and nonprofit client about an important social issue affecting Atlanta such as, youth homelessness, environmental and mental health, food access, and more. Dekalb School of the Arts will be the one of the first Dekalb County Schools to participate in re:imagine/COMMUNITY.

In a collaborative effort between DSA’s Creative Writing, Technical Theater, and Library programs Frank Mastrogiacomo, Dekalb School of the Arts’ Broadcast Media teacher, will lead DSA students through the 10-week program this spring semester

This program provides students access to new technologies and opportunities outside of the classroom. Students will produce 360 and virtual reality videos to help raise awareness about their social topic. re:imagine/ATL will provide resources and support to help Dekalb students grow and positively impact their community.

Special guests from local film studios, such as Third Rail Studios and Moonshine Post, will expose students to different careers and share their expertise in these areas to help develop storytelling techniques and top-quality videos.

re:imagine/COMMUNITY’s official kickoff event will be held at one of Atlanta’s creative industry facilities in early February. Students will learn about their clients & re:imagine/ATL in addition to participating in an open discussion on the importance of using film to reach their community.

re:imagine/COMMUNITY has been implemented at three Atlanta Public Schools since 2015. Last semester, re:imagine/ATL, 11Alive and FOCUS Brands teamed up for the first-of-its-kind program by supporting Grady High School film students’ production of creative videos for Atlanta Mission regarding youth homelessness. The re:imagine/ATL team is looking forward to expanding the program and partnering with Dekalb School of the Arts this year.
