DeKalb School of the Arts

Receives Exemplary School Designation

Key West, FL (May 15, 2016)…DeKalb School of the Arts has been designated a 2016-2018 Exemplary School by Arts Schools Network, the nation’s largest professional membership organization of specialized arts schools. Created to highlight a school’s commitment to excellence, this designation is presented to an Arts Schools Network member school in recognition of its efforts to evaluate strategically its purpose, operations, and educational programs. This honor signifies that DeKalb School of the Arts has successfully completed a self-evaluation in the following areas: strengths, areas for improvement, consistency with school-wide or program purposes, aspirations, and future challenges.

The mission of the DeKalb School of the Arts (DSA) is to provide the highest quality education possible through academics and the arts. To achieve this goal, DSA provides each student with a comprehensive education inclusive of special knowledge and experience in the arts. The curriculum trains the discipline, appreciation, and acheivement necessary for students' academic, professional and personal goals. In addition to a full complement of academic subjects, students are offered drama, dance, vocal and instrumental music, visual arts, video technology, creative writing, and technical theatre.

The school began over thirty years ago as the DeKalb Center for Performing Arts (DCPA) at Avondale High School. This magnet program was expanded to a stand-alone high school in 1999 and renamed DeKalb School of the Arts. DCPA and DSA have earned a solid reputation built upon graduates' successes at pretigious universities and professional careers. For acceptance in the the school, students must meet the academic requirements, audition in two arts disciplines, interview with the faculty, and submit recommendations from outside teachers. Students must maintain the academic admission requirments and earn two production credits per year to remain in the program.
